Berea and Patmos Claim 1st Place in Chess Intramural Games

The boys' and girls' chess teams of Berea and Patmos bagged first place in their respective divisions at the 19th Ichthus Intramural Chess Games last Thursday.

The games were held in a round-robin setup with batches (having a team of four each) within their respective division going head-to-head with each other. The batch with the most wins against the other scores a point.

In the junior's division, the Berea boys claimed 1st with 2 points, defeating Nazareth who came in 2nd with 1 point then Damascus who came 3rd with 0 points.

For the junior girls, Berea ended up on top with 2 points after winning a grueling Armageddon game (additional tie-break game) against Damascus to break a 1-1 tie. Damascus then followed in second place with one point, with Nazareth in third with zero points.

In the senior division, the Zion boys settled for second runner-up with 0 points, preceded by Olive in first runner-up with 1 point, and Patmos emerging first with a two-point victory.

For the senior girls, Zion ended up second runner-up with no points, succeeded by Olive in first runner-up with 1 point, and Patmos as the winner with a decisive 2 points even amidst an intense finish against Zion.

“I think all players enjoyed the game because for almost two years, we haven’t had the games, so everyone is very competitive,” remarked Coach Hubert Estrella as the view of players sharing handshakes and laughs after a long day of chess matches painted the background and marked the end of the Chess Intramural Games.
