“Ergonomics is what will make your posture as healthy as possible.”
Thus explained osteopathy expert Dr. John Paul Prado in an online webinar on proper ergonomics held last August 13, entitled “Work and School From Home Health and Ergonomics,” to the high school students of MGC New Life Christian Academy (MGCNLCA).
“We’re at an exciting time right now where everything has gone digital. All of our lives are pretty much on the screen… and we can’t get rid of it. So, we might as well learn how to do it safely,” he stated, citing the importance of learning proper ergonomics for online learning.
Dr. Prado kicked off the webinar with the “signs and symptoms of bad posture and prolonged sitting.” These include musculoskeletal pain (chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain, tingling sensation in extremities, and elbow pain), systematic effects on long-term health (obesity, poor blood circulation, etc.), mental and psychological effects (chronic headaches and depression, among others) and cosmetic effects (belly fat, double chin, etc.).
He then proceeded to educate the attendees on the execution of good ergonomics. According to Prado, a proper sitting position would include relaxed shoulders, supported upper and lower backs, and feet flat on the floor. Meanwhile, bigger screens with warm color-temperature displays are advisable.
Prado tied up his speech with practices that can be used to maintain this healthy lifestyle. He encouraged the attendees to take fifteen-minute breaks for every two hours of screen time to get active and relax their eyes. The doctor encouraged attendees to consume at least three liters of water per day and to exercise daily for at least twenty minutes. The session concluded with a short question-and-answer portion, allowing participants to voice out any questions.
Dr. JP Prado graduated Doctor of Medicine at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Medical Center and also studied at the Tokyo Medical in Japan, specializing in osteopathic therapy.
