Four MGCNL Students Join International Olympiads Japan, Bulgaria, UAE as Philippine Delegates

Four New Lifers will bring honor to the country and the school as they participate in various International Olympiads as part of the official Philippine delegation this July.

Recently-graduated Rickson Tan from Zion makes it a back-to-back stint as he joins the Philippine team at Chiba, Japan for the International Math Olympiad (IMO) from July 2 to 13. Andre Aw of Olive will compete in the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on July 3 to 11. Meanwhile, twins Zachary and Evan Sy of Berea are going four thousand kilometers away to Bulgaria to compete in the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) from July 23 to 29, 2023.

This is Tan’s second time to join the IMO after getting honorable mention last year. Aw and the Sy twins’ participation, meanwhile, signifies MGCNL's debut in sending multiple delegates to the IBO and the IOL.

The IMO is the oldest of these Olympiads and one of the most prestigious mathematical competitions in the world. The contest consists of six questions that are split into two consecutive days of 4.5 hours each.

The IBO is also held over two contest days with practical exams (typically four sessions of 1.5 hours) and theoretical exams (typically two sessions of 3 hours) along with a rest day in between.

The IOL is likewise held over two contest days. The first day is an individual round with five questions over six hours, while the second day is a team round also over six hours. Similar to the IBO, it also has a rest day in between. The IOL tasks participants to solve puzzles and problems, such as deciphering phrases from ancient languages to contemporary English.

The International Science Olympiads are known for their academic rigor and are widely known as the highest level of secondary school competitions.

STEM Lab Adviser, Mr. Mike Sy, expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the significant feat of MGCNL students’ opportunities to participate in various international competitions as representatives of the Philippines.

He declares, “Thinking for a few straight hours under competition pressure is not an easy task. Please pray for their safe travels as well.”

The faculty moderators and families of the four Philippine representatives continuously ask for the prayers of the MGCNL Community as they prepare to embark on their journey to Japan, UAE and Bulgaria.
