Finding Balance

The current state of our world has caused a global pause, and people have no choice but to carry out their daily activities at home. While this may be a good thing for some, some struggle to find balance in their everyday schedule, especially those who were suddenly thrust into a work-from-home situation. However, despite all the busyness, health must stay as a priority.

Through a span of almost seven months, Filipinos, especially students, haven’t gone outside due to the quarantine measures. This means spending a lot of time, if not all, at home. It’s easy to lie down and stare blankly at our phones, sleep all day, or stay up late binge watching Netflix shows. Although these activities may be “enjoyable” or “relaxing,” they shouldn’t become a daily habit.

Health is an important aspect in each of our lives. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to do the things that are also of equal importance. Good health allows us to carry out our daily schedules in a productive and optimistic manner. Most people would simply attribute the term “health” to exercising everyday. Yes, they are correct, but being healthy isn’t just based on the physical aspect. True health is so much more than that.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is a state of complete “physical, mental and social well-being” and not merely the absence of disease of infirmity. A lot of people tend to think that when you are healthy, the chances of getting sick are nonexistent. In actuality, being healthy concerns one’s overall state and not just the visual aspect of being healthy. We should begin to consider the other facets of health such as mental, emotional, spiritual, and social health.

While under quarantine, it’s easy to neglect our health due to constant distractions. But we should keep in mind that finding balance in everything we do is essential. Some suggestions to boost overall health include getting enough sleep, regulating gadget use, eating right, socializing online, journaling your thoughts and feelings, drinking enough water, and many more. These activities are simple enough that being healthy is attainable for everyone. Instead of complaining about the things we can’t control, let’s use this quarantine as an opportunity to focus on what we can do to live a healthier and better life.

Lifenews Staffers Triumph at 20th Word Cup

MGCNLCA's Lifenews brings home 16 awards from the 20th Word Cup National Conference and Contests. Held last January 28 to 29, this year's Word Cup was again hosted online by Edcalibre International.

For editorial writing, Patmos student Alexa Rae Tan garnered first place in the junior high school level while Zachary Caleb Yap from Damascus received an honorable mention in the same category. Raine Alexis Kho from Grade 11 took home third place for editorial writing in the senior high school level.

Kho was also awarded third place for sports writing in the senior high school level. Meanwhile, fellow sports staffers Annika Justine Lim, Amanda Dana Chiong, Amy Julia Ong from Patmos and Gabriel Ethan Gaw and Bianca Iyesha Sy from Damascus received honorable mentions in sports writing at the junior high school level.

For features writing, Steffi Nadine Chu from Zion garnered second place in the senior high school level while Juliana Simone Sy of Patmos received third place for pagsulat ng lathalain in the junior high school level.

Sy, along with fellow Patmos student Nathan Gabriel Hao, were both awarded second place in science writing in the junior high school level. Hao also garnered third place in copyreading and headline writing for the junior high school level.

Lastly, photojournalists Cai Nathan Lo and Cara Elise Gohoc both placed second in photojournalism in the senior high school level and the junior high school level, respectively.
