Six Science varsity members of MGC New Life Christian Academy bagged first and second place in the Know-It-All-Challenge (KIAC) held in Manila Downtown YMCA last November 26, 2022.
The team of Nathan Hao from Patmos C, Hans Tan from Olive-STEM, and Sebastian Gonzaga from Patmos C garnered first place while the team of Andre Aw, Andrew Liu, and Elliot Albano, all from Olive-STEM, won first runner-up.
KIAC is a trivia competition that covers a wide range of topics from Science, Math, History, Linguistics, English, Filipino, and general knowledge.
Hao stated, “...I think this was really a breath of fresh air because I never really got to use my knowledge in History up until now,” when talking about the topics of the questions. The History round proved to be crucial in the win of the team of Hao, Gonzaga, and Tan.
IKIAC had an initial elimination round, in which each member of the team competed alone. After that, the top 5 highest scoring teams moved on to an oral jeopardy-like round with questions of varying difficulty about each topic.
KIAC was organized by the YMCA Youth Club in Manila, with 48 pupils from 9 Chinese-Filipino schools sending two teams each to the competition that tests students on their well-rounded knowledge instead of just focusing on one topic.
As for Science Varsity’s long-term goal, Mr. Archie Maramag, adviser of the Science Varsity, said “In the long run, I’m seeing senior varsity members training the younger varsity members. I do want a deep sense of love for science, especially in the varsity.” Aside from that, the varsity also aims for students to become more proficient with research and successful in contests.
Although science varsity members may have succeeded, for now, Maramag said that he is ready to make the necessary steps to make learning science as interactive as possible for these students as this may ultimately help them in their future endeavors.
