Kuyas, guards, teachers, and students faced off for the first time in the school’s history in the MGCNL All-Stars Basketball Fundraiser last November 28, 2022.
The event was a hit for everyone who played, and the fundraising goal for the school’s Christmas Outreach was reached.
The first of two basketball games of the night kicked off as the teams of MGC New Life (MGCNL) kuyas and guards went head-to-head in what was dubbed the “Kuya All-Star” match.
Almost the entire game was neck and neck between the Kuya Blue Blazers and the Guard Red Rollers, with the third quarter ending in a tie, 41-all. Only then were the kuyas able to pull off a significant lead, going 20-6 against the guards in the fourth, winning the game 61-47.
The Kuya All-Stars MVP was awarded to Kuya Kurt Cabagay, who, alongside Kuya Reymark Biag, led the kuyas’ explosive run in the final minutes of the match. Kuya Kurt summed up his team’s secret to winning in three words, “Team up lang!”
The main event tipped off right afterward, showcasing teachers and students facing off in the first-ever MGCNL All-Star Game!
For most of the match, the teachers and coaches maintained a slight lead, which led to winning the game 47-43 against the students. The coaches’ playmaking in tandem with the teachers’ ability to create shots granted their team victory.
Coach James Sia, who played alongside fellow basketball coaches, Coach John Sia, and Coach Jef Go, mentioned, “It was fun to play and bond with MGC[NL] students and teachers.”
MGCNL All-Stars raised over ₱110,000, which was split between a donation to the school’s Christmas Outreach and giving the kuyas and ates Christmas gifts through the Ate Kuya Day group.
Lucas Tan of Grade 11 Olive, the event’s head project manager shared, “In general, I felt great about the event, the hard work, and effort of my wonderful groupmates… The amount we raised certainly did pass my expectation[s] and for that, I’m grateful to everyone who helped. [The younger batches] better continue this tradition!”
MGCNL All-Stars is one of several social impact projects that were created as part of this year’s Grade 11 students’ requirements for their Empowerment Technology course.
