The MGC New Life Badminton Varsity came out first place overall in the Group of Private School Owners and Administrators (GPSOA) Sports Tournament held last Monday, February 6, in the 7th-floor gymnasium.
The line-up consisting of Andre Aw (Gr. 11 ABM), Andrew Liu (Gr. 11 STEM), Adrian Justin Ching (Gr. 12 STEM), and Rickson Caleb Tan (Gr. 12 STEM), for the Boys Division, and Amanda Jade Ching (Gr. 10), Ashley Mica Hayden Chua (Gr. 10), Isabelle Ngo (Gr. 11 ABM), and Brianna See (Gr. 11 STEM) for the Girls Division went up against HSL Braille College, Inc. and Thy Covenant Montessori School (TCMS).
Despite their solid wins, the players still strive to play harder and with even more accuracy.
Zion student Rickson Tan shared that he was both excited and nervous as this was the first time he played in three years. “Overall, I think I didn’t play that well but I still had a lot of fun playing the game.”
The Boys and Girls Divisions were each separated into two singles categories and one doubles category, shifting through a round robin where the school with the most matches won moves onto the finals. The winner of the finals then qualifies for APSA before battling head-to-head for the spots to compete in the NCR meet.
In the lead-up to the finals, Coach Owen Dee Lopez strategized with the players as he pointed out the holes in their opponents' playing styles.
With this, the New Lifers sailed through their matches as their competitors struggled to return their precise hits, as the varsity’s training proved evident with their convincing wins.
