The MGCNLCA chess team had an impressive performance in the 2023 GPSOA APSA-TAPAT Qualifying Leg with players achieving the top two spots in elementary and high school boys and girls division last March 11 to 12 in Lower Bicutan, R. P. Cruz School, Taguig.
The elementary boys division saw 5th grader Arwin Hernandez garner first place with four points, and have a higher tiebreak over 2nd grader Caleb Garcia, who followed in second with four points.
Meanwhile, Iora Garcia, Grade 5, bagged first and obtained five points in the elementary girls division.
In the high school division, National Master (NM) Davin Romualdez and Allie Ong both emerged first in the boys and girls category respectively, both qualifying for the NCR meet.
Romualdez, only in Grade 7, and Ong in Grade 8, defeated players both three to four years their senior and veteran players who had been the opponents of previous batches.
In addition, Gianna Villacorta, Grade 8, garnered third place, attaining three points.
