MGC New Life Christian Academy’s (MGCNLCA) mathletes proved their mettle as they raked in awards from various Math competitions last October 2021.
Rickson Caleb Tan (Olive-STEM) took home the gold in the Junior High division while Zachary Thomas Sy (Nazareth A) bagged bronze in the Upper Primary in the second round of the 10th International Mathematics Assessment for Schools (IMAS) last October 22, 2021.
Meanwhile, seven MGCNLCA teams competed in the three divisions of Sipnayan 2021, an annual Math competition hosted and organized by the Ateneo Mathematics Society, from October 9 to 23.
Out of the 71 teams in the Grade School division, 81 teams in the Junior High Division, and 86 teams in the Senior High School division who sat down for eliminations, only the top twenty-four in each category would participate in the semifinals. The dominating six teams in each division would then take part in the finals.
Annika Angeline Browne (Jordan B), Kaiser Travis Chan (Jordan A), and Maribeth Jullian Tiong (Jordan A) garnered first overall in the Grade School Division. Senior High School students Shawn Darren Chua (Zion-STEM), Rickson Caleb Tan (Olive-STEM), and Louie Matheson Wong (Zion-STEM) placed second in the Senior High School category.
The team of Elliot Xander Albano (Patmos B), Andre Gerard Aw (Patmos B), and Hans Dominic Gamboa (Patmos A) also competed as finalists in the Junior High School Division.
Three other MGCNLCA teams qualified for the semifinals:
Kate Marie Aquino (Galilee C), Anya Taylor Chong (Galilee A), and Caitlyn Stephanie Yu (Galilee B) competed in the Grade School Division;
Joshua Samuel Chiu (Gethsemane A), Pierce Victor Takai (Gethsemane A), and Tyler Gavin Uy (Gethsemane C) participated in the Grade School Division;
Annika Kaitlynn Chong (Damascus A), Nathan Gabriel Hao (Damascus C), and Annika Justine Lim (Damascus A) competed in the Junior High School Division.
Other participants in this year’s Sipnayan include Kyle Aidan Chua (Patmos B), Evan Tyler Sy (Nazareth D), and Zachary Thomas Sy (Nazareth A).
Lastly, five Newlifers bagged the gold in the recently concluded Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad (SEAMO) 2021, along with seven silver medalists and twelve bronze medalists.
Those who got the gold were Tyler Gavin Uy, Maribeth Jullian Tiong, Zachary Thomas Sy, Nathan Gabriel Hao, and Elliot Xander Albano. Silver medalists include Nathan Gohoc, Pierce Victor Takai, Kaiser Travis Chan, Nathan Andrew Alviar, Faith Caitlin Ng, Annika Justine Lim, and Hans Dominic Gamboa. The following got bronze medals: Kate Marie Aquino, Nathaniel John Sia, Annika Angeline Browne, Hope Keila Ng, Jairus Jacob Lee, Laira Caylee Chunpeng, Aaron Russel Kho, Lance Ngo, Chloe Grace Ang, Carlo Gabriel Chua, Andre Gerard Aw, and Kyle Aidan Chua,
SEAMO Medalists are eligible to join the Champions Division of SEAMO X 2021 in January 2022.
The mathletes were trained by StemLab, under the leadership of Mr. Michael Sy and Math varsity coordinator Mr. Carl Andrew Sy.
