MGCNLCA Resumes Classes After Two-Week Break Extension Due to COVID-19 Holiday Surge

The second semester of S.Y. 2021-2022 finally commenced this Monday, January 17, after two weeks of an extended break. Because many families of teachers and students contracted COVID-19 during the holiday surge, MGC New Life Christian Academy (MGCNLCA) implemented the extension to give everyone a chance to recover.

The school released a memo on January 3, announcing the week-long extension from January 3 to 7, followed by another memo released on the 7th regarding another week’s extension from January 10 to 14. That same week, other schools also declared an academic break for the same reasons given by MGCNLCA.

Last Friday, January 14, the DepEd-NCR announced a suspension of classes for schools in Metro Manila from January 15 to January 22 to ease the health burden of the COVID surge among school personnel. However, in another memo, DepEd Taguig-Pateros later clarified that it is up to the discretion of private schools whether they will suspend classes or not. Given this, MGCNLCA principal Helen Villanueva decided to push through with the resumption of classes on January 17, as the school already implemented a two-week health break earlier on.

Over the Christmas break, cases started rising due to the arrival of the new Omicron variant. Daily cases have now reached over 39,000, with positivity rates over 47%.
