MGC New Life Christian Academy (MGCNLCA) mathlete and representative of the Philippine Team, Rickson Caleb Y. Tan, bagged honorable mention in the 63rd International Math Olympiad (IMO) held in Oslo, Norway last July 6 to 16, 2022.
The Philippine Team, of which Tan is a member, took home two bronze medals and four honorable mention awards, placing 55th of 104 overall, a massive feat for the country.
Aside from Tan, other members of the team include former New Lifer Filbert Ephraim Wu; Mohammad Nur Casib, Raphael Dylan Dalida, Sarji Elijah Bona, and Enrico Rolando Martinez. These six students came up on top among the top 30 national finalists of the Philippine Math Olympiad (PMO) after two months of intensive training and a grueling selection process,
“Getting into IMO is nowhere easy. After getting selected in the top 30 national finalists for this year’s PMO, all of us had to undergo a two-month intensive training. We trained for roughly 16-18 hours a week on top of our current school work. After each session, we had to take quizzes and we had ‘team-selection-tests’ as well which all were taken into account to pick the students who will get into the Philippine IMO team,” Tan explained.
Tan expressed, “Motivation to get in was really what helped me pull through all of these. Without it, I wouldn't have been able to get into the IMO team and eventually get an honorable mention.”
IMO is known to be the most prestigious mathematics competition with over 100 countries with at most six contestants per country participating. For this year’s competition, 104 countries with a total of 589 student mathletes participated in the 63rd IMO.
