After a grueling battle of talented New Lifers, the duo of graduating students Jan Darryl Lim and Franxine Uel Cawaon came up on top of the 20 acts that auditioned and emerged as the winner of the second edition of MGCNL’s Got Talent, “A Star Is Born.”
Grade 6 student Brielle Marquisha Pua came in second place, while the sibling duo of Grade 11 student Erin Kimberly Co and Grade 8 student Miles Vincent Co, known as the Zingers, bagged third place.
The second edition of MGCNL’s Got Talent, A Star Is Born, was officially held last December 18, 4:00 to 6:00 pm via Zoom as well as live-streamed on Facebook. The event, hosted by Gianna Reese Bocobo and Raine Alexis Kho, marked the Student Government’s (SG) first-ever event to be hosted live from the school’s auditorium since the start of the pandemic. Attended by over 260 participants, the ten finalists competed against one another in order to win one of three grand prizes: P20,000, P12,000, and P8,000 for first, second, and third place, respectively. A raffle with six prizes, including Sabbat earbuds, a XiaoMi smartwatch, an Amaia gaming chair, a JBL speaker, a Razer Seiren microphone, and a Mofii wireless keyboard, was also held during the event.
To begin the program, the SG president, Trei Sebastian Ngo, led the opening prayer. Following that was an opening act by Grade 8 student Elijah Samuel Tongco – MGCNL’s very own yoyo master!
The hosts then introduced the finalists participating in the event, namely Arron Lim, Caitlin Gaw, Bianca Ong, Brielle Pua, Kendrix Lin, Hans Gamboa, Harrod Sze, Sofie Santiago, Darryl & Uel, and The Zingers. They also introduced the three judges who will determine the winners: Daphne Jocson, Reginald Tan, and Bianca Espiritu.
After the performances, the audience was given a chance to vote for their choices during the intermission. The audience was given a link and QR code to vote for their favorite act. Audience Votes made up 10% of the overall score, with the remaining 90% made up of 20% Confidence, 25% Creativity, 15% Appearance & Sound, and 30% Overall Performance.
The winners were then revealed when all the scores were computed. The Zingers, a sibling duo consisting of Grade 11 student Erin Kimberly Co and Grade 8 student Miles Vincent Co, came in third place and received P8,000 as their award. The siblings sang “Therapy” from the soundtrack of “tick, tick…BOOM!” complete with an added twist of their own skit.
Grade 6 student Brielle Marquisha Pua, who sang “Runaway” by AURORA, came in second place and won P12,000.
Finally, in first place and crowned champions of MGCNL’s Got Talent 2.0: “A Star Is Born” were Grade 12 students Jan Darryl Lim and Franxine Uel Cawaon, who received P20,000 as their prize. The two serenaded the crowd with their rendition of Nathan Sykes and Ariana Grande’s “Over and Over Again.”
MGCNL’s Got Talent 2.0: “A Star Is Born” is a fundraiser for the school’s Outreach team – whose mission is to help families by giving them a spark of hope during the Christmas season. As of December 23, the total amount raised from this event’s donations amounted to more than P400,000. Instead of being used to purchase Noche Buena packages for the 1800 outreach families, the amount will now be donated to those affected by Typhoon Odette, given the gravity of what happened and the urgency of the needs of our fellow Filipinos.
