Last Thursday, November 17, 2022, was an exciting day for the Upper Primary students as they voted for their class representatives to make up the newly formed PYP Student Council (PYP SC) for grade school.
The PYP SC is composed of representatives from each class from Grades 4-6 and was established with the purpose of giving students “a voice, choice, and ownership in using what they are learning to help the learning community,” according to Ms. Hannah Repotente and Mr. Glenn Brombuela, the advisors of the council.
“In the IB-PYP program, we have learner profile attributes or character traits we want each student to develop such as being caring, principled, open-minded, and [a] thinker. Being able to serve their fellow students in the school community is a great and authentic way to apply these,” Ms. Repotente explained.
During the elections, the students running were each given a chance to share their campaign speeches before the class deposited their votes into a ballot box.
Nina Isabelle Mateo, one of the Galilee students who ran, shared, “I ran for Student Council because I figured out it was fun and it would challenge me. I also wanted [to] meet the other people who ran to make new friends.”
“I ran for class representative to be more involved in school and contribute to make [sic] this school year more fun and memorable,” said Angelina Joyce Go, a Grade 6 student who won the tiebreaker in her class by one point. William Kendrick Ty from Gethsemane also mentioned that he wanted to help make the school a better place for students to enjoy learning.
The elected class representatives for the PYP SC were Alyssa Grace Ng, Chessa Alexis Tiu, Sasha Chloe Go, Caitlin Chua, and Mikhail Wong for Grade 4; Joshua Samuel Chiu, Raiden Kenzo Cabilangan, Benno Julian Ang, and Caleb Zachary Tiu for Grade 5; and Angelina Joyce Go, Raine Harmony Siy, Caitlyn Yu, and Abbie Gail Ang for Grade 6.
