After finishing within the top 6 in the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Camp (MOSC), Rickson Tan from Zion STEM will once again represent the Philippine team in the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) to be held on July 2-13 at Chiba, Japan.
The 64th IMO will mark Tan’s second participation in the prestigious olympiad and his last math competition in high school before he enters college. “It feels great to get in again, to be in the IMO again, but it's quite sad that this is a reminder that this will be my last math competition in high school,” Tan reflects.
Eighteen of the top high school Filipino mathematicians in the Philippines vetted by the Philippine Mathematical Olympiad (PMO) participated in MOSC, which had sessions both held online and in UP Diliman, to vie for a spot in the national team. In MOSC, PMO National Finalists took quizzes on every session and 2 team selection tests, which are made to replicate the IMO. The Philippine team selected the top 6 based on their performances in APMO and MOSC.
Joining Tan will be Raphael Dylan T. Dalida from Philippine Science High School, Mohammad Nur G. Casib from Philippine Science High School - Central Mindanao Campus, Filbert Ephraim S. Wu from Victory Christian International School, Jerome Austin N. Te from Jubilee Christian Academy, and Alvann Walter Paredes Dy from St. Jude Catholic School.
The Institute of Mathematics in University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, Department of Mathematics of Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), Science Education Institute of DOST, and the Mathematical Society of the Philippines all contribute to MOSC to help prepare the Philippine team for IMO and decide its representatives.
Team Leader Ms. Hazel Joy Shi, Deputy Team Leader Mr. Kerish Villegas, and Observer Mr. Russelle Guadalupe will accompany the 2023 IMO team to Japan.
Twelve trainers, including the team leader, deputy team leader, and observer, from various colleges trained the participants throughout MOSC.
Aside from Tan, from the numerous MGCNLCA PMO contestants, Elliot Albano from Olive STEM also participated in MOSC as a National Finalist, while Hans Dominic Gamboa also of Olive STEM made it to the Areas Stage in the 25th PMO.
As he closes this chapter of his high school math career, Tan sends out his final encouragement to his juniors.
“To everyone who's in the math varsity, despite me not visiting quite often, it still gives me motivation when I know there are a lot of other people passionate about math inside of school as well. So, I wish you guys all the best and as always, have fun problem solving!” cheers the senior.
